Penguin Coast

imgresMARYLAND ZOO- “One of the top ten behind-the-scenes tours in America”

Behind-the-Scenes experiences are private, specially designed tours and are scheduled personally for you. These unique up close encounters are planned and coordinated with each individual group in mind.

Take a tour of the largest outdoor penguin exhibit in North America and witness a day in the life of the largest colony of African penguins in North America. The colony was started in 1967 and is growing from 60 to100 birds, thanks to the new Penguin Coast exhibit. The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore has raised more than 800 chicks over the years and plays a large role in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) for these endangered birds.

You will waddle, or step, into the Penguin Holding Building and out on the island of Penguin Coast. There you will see the food preparation area, hospital room, chick rearing area, nesting room, and 360 degree pool. In each area, keepers will share in-depth knowledge of penguin health, breeding and behaviors. They will also discuss penguins in the wild and the efforts currently underway to conserve them.
