Episode #19

The health of wild animals starts with good nutrition. And good nutrition starts with an epic operation of ordering and delivering things like hay, meat, produce … you name it, the Zoo’s got it. In a Zoo the responsibility for managing all the various food and supplies rests with the commissary team. What’s a commissary, you ask? Think of it as a giant grocery store for animals with everything you can imagine inside (and maybe some things you’ve never even thought of). At the Maryland Zoo, Commissary Manager Andrew Young leads the effort to purchase, stock, and deliver all of the items needed by hundreds of species on a daily basis. It’s a big job that happens behind-the-scenes and it’s a critical function that takes an entire team to make successful. Learn what happens in the Zoo’s commissary and how this massive operation works for wildlife.
