Today (Thursday, November 11) Kirby the warthog will be leaving the Zoo to find a new family at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. Kirby and his brother Cecil were the two warthog piglets born at the Zoo this spring to mom Kumari and dad Kajani. While we are sad to see him go, we know that the folks at Sedgwick County Zoo will take great care of him, and hopefully he’ll get the chance to be a warthog father someday too!
Kumari and Kajani will be reunited in their exhibit, and we have a recommendation for them to breed again next year from the Warthog Population Management Plan (PMP) coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). PMPs provide breeding recommendations to maximize genetic diversity, with the goal of ensuring the long-term survival of the captive population and the health of individual animals.
The warthog population in the US has been on the decline for a few years, so this was an important birth for both The Maryland Zoo and the PMP. Cecil, Kirby’s brother, left the Zoo earlier this fall for a new home in Texas.
