Our brand-new penguin mascot is here, help us hatch the perfect name

New penguin mascot outside at Penguin Coast

After many memorable appearances, Sphen the penguin (named for the African penguin’s latin name, SPHENiscus demersus) mascot has been retired. However, a brand-new penguin mascot has arrived at the Zoo, and it is missing one thing: a name!

  • Pip: A penguin cracking the shell of the egg when hatching
  • Charm: For Baltimore, Charm City
  • Waddles: Shuffling around like a penguin
  • Steve: In honor of Steve Sarro, first program leader of the African Penguin Species Survival Plan and previous bird and mammal curator at the Maryland Zoo

And the winning name is… Steve!

Winning Name Prize

The winning name suggestion comes with a special prize: a Penguin Encounter & Zoo admission! If multiple submissions were entered for the same name, a winner will be selected through a random drawing.
