SECURITY OFFICER (2nd Shift)

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeking an individual to join our team as a full-time Security Officer. This is a non-exempt position. The Security Officer will maintain omnipresence throughout the Zoo’s campus to maintain order and attend to guest/employee security and first aid/CPR requirements. This position will rotate throughout all buildings, grounds and all animal areas and report suspicious conditions or unusual occurrences, assist with locating lost children, and perform other related duties as assigned by the Security Lieutenant. This person will be responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures of the Zoo and promoting the mission of The Zoo. Other responsibilities include writing and investigating required shift and accident reports on visitors and shift activities, obtaining and providing general information about zoo operations, and attending meetings and represent the Zoo on various committees. This is an evening shift position (4:30 PM to 12:30 AM).

Minimum Qualifications:
Two years experience; Good working knowledge of security operations in a business environment; First Aid certification preferred; and Valid driver’s license. OUTREACH PROGRAMS RESERVATIONIST

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the Education team as an Outreach Programs Reservationist. This person will provide superior customer service and communication with Outreach customers through all stages of the process, and work to meet the needs of new and existing Outreach customers while ensuring safe and high quality programs. The qualified individual may regularly deliver educational programs featuring live animals off Zoo grounds at a variety of locations such as schools, summer camps, and senior centers and support the Education Division through general administrative duties such as data entry, mailings, and reports. The Outreach Programs Reservationist will also be responsible for answering incoming calls and requests for information needed for the reservation of Education Programs, recording and delivering phone messages and faxes to appropriate staff, redirecting calls when necessary, quoting appropriate rates based on specific needs of customers, developing a schedule that works for the customer and zoo staff, obtaining accurate and detailed information from customers in order to complete and confirm a written contract and cultivating Zoo and customer relationships through marketing and excellent customer service. This is a full time, hourly, non-exempt position.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent (Some college preferred); Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; Experience with customer service; Proficient computer skills; and, Experience with MS Access preferred; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Ability to work indoors, view a computer screen and type for extended periods of time; Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions; Must be able to drive a golf cart, minivan and cargo van; Must be able to stand and remain active for an eight hour shift; Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed; Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; Must be able to exert up to 30 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move objects; and, Daily contact with plants and animals including being subject to bites, stings and scrapes. MAMMAL COLLECTION AND CONSERVATION MANAGER

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is looking for a qualified individual to join our team as a Mammal Collection and Conservation Manager. The Mammal Collection and Conservation Manager is responsible for guiding and directing the scientific management and careful stewardship of the Zoo’s mammal collection under the direction of the General Curator. This person will represent the zoo’s interests on issues involving living collections to government agencies, education and conservation organizations, will actively collaborate with other divisions to ensure that husbandry and behavioral management practices are to the highest standards, and will participate and maintain the Zoo’s involvement in AZA, PMP’s, TAG’s and SSP’s in compliance with AZA regulations and standards. The qualified candidate will also aid in the organization and development of the animal collection plan, oversee the captive breeding program of the mammal collection, arrange shipments, sales, purchases, and trades of animals at the direction of the General Curator, participate in exhibit renovation, design and future plans for the institution, oversee enrichment through established enrichment guidelines and protocols, and coordinate with the medical staff for animal health care.

Minimum Qualifications:

JUNIOR ZOO CREW INSTRUCTOR

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeks an enthusiastic Instructor to join our team! The Junior Zoo Crew Instructor will supervise up to fifty (50) fourteen to seventeen year olds for a six-week summer service-learning program. The primary function of this position is to plan and lead educational sessions about topics related to wildlife and conservation that will guide the students through their day; plan and implement pre-program training sessions for participants with involvement from current docents; planning, organizing and scheduling activities such as EdZoocation stations and other service opportunities with involvement from Education, Animal and other departments; meet with Zoo staff for feedback on participants’ performance and advocate for participants’ needs and interests; plan, coordinate and supervise special field trips and activities (for example, National Aquarium Exchange, National Zoo visit and other volunteer activities) and understand and follow all Zoo, AZA and other regulating organization policies and procedures; keep detailed daily attendance records and follow up on attendance problems with participants’ parents/guardians. This is a part time, seasonal, hourly position. Camp will run from approximately mid-June through mid-August.

Minimum Qualifications:

In addition, the Summer Camp Assistant will be responsible for the safety and well-being of all camp participants as managed by the Summer Camp Coordinator, maintain proper protocol and procedures required for all Zoo interactions with animals, visitors, and program participants and follow all zoo safety policies and procedures. The Super Kids Camp Instructor will serve as enrichment specialist to approximately 10 students by delivering reading curriculum through zoo lessons, assisting in the preparation and presentation of all programs including the preparation of materials, and working with reading specialists at sites to help students and manage behavior. This person will assist with educational summer camps on zoo grounds and at Super Kids Camp sites by leading group games, helping participants complete crafts and projects, supervising snacks, leading participants through Zoo, and completing office activities. This is considered a part time, hourly, seasonal position. Camp will run from approximately mid-June through mid-August. Applicants must be available for all camp dates.

Minimum Qualifications:

EVENT ASSISTANT (GROUP SALES)

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our team as a part-time, seasonal Event Assistant in the Group Sales Department. This is an hourly, seasonal, non-exempt position. The Events Assistant will assist with the operations of the Group Sales department’s promotional initiatives and on-site events, with the main focus of birthday party coordination. The Event Assistant is responsible for exciting, engaging, and entertaining guests in a way that promotes a positive Zoo experience. This position will assist with the planning and implementation of onsite events, gather all supplies for birthday parties during assigned shift, utilizing checklists to ensure all necessary supplies are being collected, and complete setup of birthday party area to include tables, chairs, place settings, crafts etc. Other responsibilities include assisting guests with serving the food, beverages and other refreshments, breaking down birthday party setup and clean area after guests have left the party, collecting/returning any unused supplies to their assigned location at the end of the party, and providing general support for the Group Sales department. The successful candidate will respond appropriately to guests’ questions, comments, or concerns at on-site functions and interact with guests in a professional and courteous manner. Other duties as assigned.

ANIMAL KEEPER

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeks an enthusiastic professional to join our dynamic team! We are looking for a flexible keeper who has experience in the basic husbandry of a variety of species. The successful candidate will work in many areas of the Animal Department and gain the opportunity to work with a diverse collection of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. This person will be providing daily care and feeding of animals, observing animals to detect indications of illness such as changes in appetite, disposition, habits and physical appearance, and participating in medical procedures. This person will also provide appropriate training and enrichment to animals. Other responsibilities include general maintenance of grounds, formal and informal presentations for the public, and conservation initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education-Bachelor's degree in Biology, Animal Science, or a related field preferred. One year experience working with animals, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to accept direction and work as part of a team. PARKING SERVICES AGENT

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our team as part-time, seasonal Parking Services Agents. This is an hourly, seasonal, non-exempt position. The Parking Services Agent is responsible for directing vehicles and greeting guests in the parking lots next to the Zoo’s Main Gate. This position will open and close parking lots as necessary, monitor all parking areas to prevent break-ins and/or vandalism of vehicles and Zoo property, and keep all parking areas and entrance areas clean and free of litter. The successful candidate will ensure guest safety at all times and adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo. This person will be communicate with the Security Department by radio contact as needed following Zoo radio etiquette and protocol at all times. The ideal candidate should possess a clear comprehension of vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow, ability to identify and resolve guest issues, and ability to work independently and stay productive with minimal direct supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our team as part-time, seasonal Member Services Agents. This is an hourly, seasonal, non-exempt position. The Member Services Agent will support the Membership division of the Institutional Advancement Department in delivering an engaging experience by continually improving member relations skills and general job performance. This position will perform a variety of assigned duties in all aspects of the Membership Division including, but not limited to, data entry, membership sales, moving and organizing stock, and greeting, interacting with and giving general direction to zoo members and guests. The Member Services Agent is responsible for completing accurate and efficient monetary transactions, maintaining precise daily records, and taking responsible measures to safeguard all acquired revenue. Other responsibilities include following all Membership and Maryland Zoological Society policies and procedures, remaining trained and up to date on safety procedures, and proactively seeking out new ways to improve customer service at the Zoo. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds and the ability to identify and resolve guest issues.

Veterinary Intern

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is looking for a qualified veterinarian to complete a one-year internship that focuses on training in all aspects of the medical and surgical care of zoo animals, including diagnosis, treatment, preventative medicine, parasitology, nutrition, anesthesiology, pathology, record keeping, and staff communication regarding zoological cases. The intern will be required to develop and carry out a research project for presentation at a scientific meeting with the goal of publication. The intern will spend blocks of time at the National Aquarium in Baltimore (NAIB) and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Tri-State Bird Rescue, as well as involvement in cases and rounds at Johns Hopkins Department of Comparative Pathology, depending on the interests of the individual. Monthly case rounds are conducted with the veterinary staff from the NAIB.  The internship position is a full time, exempt position.  The internship will start July 1 of 2010. Application deadline is April 1, 2010. Applicants must submit a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, official professional and graduate transcripts with class rank, and 3 letters of reference.

Minimum Qualifications:

Business Systems Analyst

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeking an enthusiastic, goal-oriented individual to join our team as a Business Systems Analyst. This is a salary, exempt position. The Business Systems Analyst is responsible for assisting business and operational leaders with implementing, supporting, and optimizing business systems. The individual in this position will be responsible for applying proven communication, analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills to help maximize the benefit of IT system investments. This position will conduct and/or participate in the analysis of client business processes and functional requirements and in the preparation of appropriate documentation to communicate and validate the information, and be responsible for gathering, analyzing and documenting business process and related application system requirements, providing application system support, and managing assigned projects. The Business Systems Analyst will develop and implement test plans, design and develop custom reports, and be responsible for managing project teams on small and mid-sized projects to include review and update of project deliverables, assignment of resources, status reporting, issue tracking, maintenance of project plans, and coordination with other groups. Other responsibilities include assisting with analyzing and managing new and/or existing vendor relationships, communicating with team, customers, and vendors when changes occur, assisting in setting overall system priorities, and participating in business case development. The Business Systems Analyst will remain abreast of trends and regulations to ensure effectiveness and compliance within the technology division, maintain contact with vendors to ensure seamless service to all end-users, and ensure service delivery to Zoo users, to make certain that they are provided professional, courteous and timely support and service. The successful candidate will maintain confidentiality and security of employee information, correspondence, reports, and files and adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo. This position may be assigned additional duties to meet business and departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or related discipline (experience and training may be substituted in lieu of education).  Three to five years of related business systems analysis experience; Two to three years of project management experience; Understanding of all phases of system development life cycle; Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials such as requirements, impact analysis, and design documentation; Familiarity with database management systems and query languages (e.g. SQL); Experience with report design and development tools (e.g. Crystal Reports); Experience examining and re-engineering processes, and developing and implementing new processes; and, Valid driver’s license.  Must be able to stand and remain active for an eight hour shift; Must be able to sit upright for long periods of time; Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed; Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions; Must be able to exert up to 35 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move objects; and, Must be able to operate a variety of office machines and equipment including two-way radio, computer, telephone, scanner, copier, fax, golf cart, calculator, etc.

Maintenance Foreman-HVACR

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our team as a full-time Maintenance Foreman-HVACR. This is a non-exempt position. The Maintenance Foreman-HVACR, under general supervision, installs, services, and repairs a variety of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. This position is responsible for comprehensive preventative maintenance schedules and for assuring the HVACR systems perform to their optimal efficiency. The Maintenance Foreman-HVACR will also comprehend and analyze controls and wiring schematics, be responsible for brazing, soldering, and welding and for performing minor field fabrication, and assist with other tasks/responsibilities as assigned, related to repair, maintenance, renovation and preservation of the Zoo’s campus and its facilities as a whole. The individual in this position must be able to work collaboratively with other employees, providing assistance or back up as needed, provide effective written communications to include, but not limited to e-mail work orders, feedback, and reports, and assist with management of relationships with vendors. The Maintenance Foreman-HVACR will interact professionally and courteously with guests and coworkers, communicate with fellow employees by a campus wide radio as needed following Zoo radio etiquette and protocol at all times, and adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo. Other responsibilities include supervising and providing assistance to maintenance helpers, temporary staff, volunteers, and contractors as needed, maintaining flow and progress of HVAC work orders, and attending meetings and representing the Zoo on various committees. This is an essential position that requires being on call 24/7 for snow removal, power outages, and other zoo emergencies. This position may be assigned additional duties to meet business and departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications:
Associates degree in related field (Five years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree). Minimum of five years of experience in the Maintenance Field; Maryland HVAC Journeyman’s License preferred; EPA Certification for refrigerants; Soldering, brazing, and welding experience; Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word; and, Valid Driver’s License. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work- must be able to stand and remain active, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb and balance for an eight hour shift; Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed; Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions; Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; Exposure to Zoonotic diseases and risk of animal attack; and, Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, telephone, two-way radio, vehicles, golf carts, machinery, vehicles, hand tools, carpentry tool, refrigeration equipment, etc.

Security Sergeant

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our team as a full-time Security Sergeant. This is a non-exempt position. The Security Sergeant will oversee the security operations and supervise the activities of the security officers and other security personnel at the zoo during the assigned business shift. This position will monitor and rotate throughout all buildings, grounds and all animal areas and report suspicious conditions or unusual occurrences, handle police calls and security investigations, be responsible for providing guest control, including challenging situations, and remain on call 24 hours/day to handle alarms and emergency situations. The Security Sergeant will interact with guests and staff in a friendly, professional and informed manner while assisting with first aid, locating lost children, parking safety, safety throughout the zoo, and direction assistance, etc. This person will be responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures of the Zoo and for ensuring that all established standards of professionalism and protocol are being practiced by all staff. The successful candidate will communicate effectively with staff and the public regarding standard operating procedures and collaborate with the Security Captain on all matters concerning personnel. Other responsibilities include compiling shift and accident reports on visitors and shift activities, attending meetings and representing the Zoo on various committees, and monitoring radios to ensure effective communication. This position may be assigned additional duties to support current business needs for the department.

Minimum Qualifications:
Must have Associates degree or high school diploma and five years of experience; Minimum of three years of related experience; Good working knowledge of security operations in a business environment; First Aid certification preferred; and, Possess a valid driver’s license. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb and balance; Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed; Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions; Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; and, Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, copier, fax, scanner, telephone, two-way radio, golf carts, and vehicles, etc.
