Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule a Zoo visit to my facility?

Step 1: To request a ZOOmobile program, please complete the ZOOmobile Request Form. Please contact us to request a Story Time, Conservation Conversation, Traveling Trunk or other Outreach experience.

Email: outreach@marylandzoo.org

Phone: 443.552.5300

Fax: 443.320.9034

Mail: 1876 Mansion House Drive, Baltimore, MD 21217

Step 2: Once the request form is complete, the Outreach Administrator will contact you to discuss dates and program availability. Once we have all of the necessary information, the Outreach Administrator will confirm your reservation.

Step 3: The Outreach Administrator will contact you up to two weeks prior to your visit to verify that we have all of the details of our visit in order.

How far in advance should I schedule my Outreach experience?

We recommend contacting us to schedule your program at least 8 weeks in advance because availability is limited and our calendar fills up quickly. We are able to schedule up to a year in advance, and contacting us early will help to ensure that we find a date that works.

What if my group is larger than the audience size limit? Are there discounts for scheduling more than one program?

The audience size limits are important to adhere to for the quality of your programs and for the safety of the audience and the Animal Ambassadors. Discounts may apply when scheduling two or more programs on the same day at the same location. Layover fees may also apply. Please contact us for a quote.

Will the Zoo travel to my facility? What are the travel fees?

The ZOOmobile travels throughout Maryland and within a limited radius beyond the State’s boundaries. Travel fees apply outside of Baltimore City, and are based on your facility’s distance from the Zoo. Please contact us for a quote.

Do you offer free or discounted programs?

We occasionally receive grant funding to provide free or discounted programming for underserved audiences. This funding is generally for specific facilities that we will contact when we receive grants. However, we are happy to support anyone willing to seek grant funding to support an Outreach visit.

When is payment due? What payment methods are accepted?

Payment is due in full two weeks prior to your program date.

  • Checks made out to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore can be mailed to:

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore

C/O Outreach

1876 Mansion House Drive

Baltimore, MD 21217

  • Credit card payments are accepted by phone by calling 443.552.5300.

What time will you arrive for the program to set up?

The Outreach instructors will arrive between 15-30 minutes prior to the program to set up their materials. Please be prepared to greet them and show them where to park and set up.

What happens if there is inclement weather?

If the Zoo or your facility is operating under a delay, we will contact you to discuss options. Outreach programs will be canceled under any of the following circumstances:

  • Baltimore City public schools are closed due to weather
  • Your county’s public schools are closed due to weather

Please also note that the animals are unable to travel from the Zoo when temperatures are above 100°F or below 0°F. In this instance we will work with you to determine whether to reschedule or present the program without animals.

How do I change my program date or cancel my reservation?

If you need to change your program date or cancel your reservation, please let us know at least ten days in advance. Cancellations made within ten days of your scheduled program date will not be refunded, and changes to scheduled date will result in a $50 change fee.

What is the difference between a ZOOmobile, Story Time, Conservation Conversation and Traveling Trunk?

ZOOmobiles, Story Times, and Conservation Conversations are educational programs lead by an experienced Zoo Educator. Traveling Trunks are educational kits filled with educational materials, activities, and lesson plans for classroom use which teachers can reserve for two weeks.

Outreach Program Chart

Are there any other types of programs that you offer?

If you do not see a program topic or program style that fits your needs, please contact us to discuss options. We may be able to create a custom opportunity for your group.

Do you offer programs appropriate for participants with access and/or functional needs?

We are able to modify most of the programs offered to meet the needs of your audience. Please contact us to discuss the best options for your group.

Do your programs meet curriculum standards?

All Outreach programs are designed to support Next Generation Science Standards and Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards. If you need more information, please contact us.

What kinds of animals will visit during a program? Can I request a specific Animal Ambassador for a program? Will my group get to touch or hold the animals?

The zoo houses many species of Animal Ambassador, including reptiles, birds, small mammals, amphibians, and invertebrates. These animals are all small enough to travel in a kennel to your site. We carefully choose Animal Ambassadors for each program to support the program topic as well as to provide a wide diversity and a fun and educational experience for your audience. We are unable to guarantee requests for specific animals at any time. Since the safety of the audience is a primary concern, we cannot allow audience members to feed or hold any of the Animal Ambassadors. While we are eager to provide up-close, personal encounters with the Animal Ambassadors, not every animal is safe to touch. For the health and safety of the audience as well as our animals, we also cannot permit touching when the audience is large.

Do you visit birthday parties?

The Zoo’s Outreach team does not visit birthday parties. Other options to consider include the following:

  • Click here to schedule a birthday party at the Zoo.
  • Ask your child’s teacher if you can sponsor an Outreach program for your child’s class or camp.
