This year the Maryland Zoo has been collaborating with The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on Project SNOWstorm. This project is a research effort that tracks an increase in snowy owls in the United States that resulted from an irruption in the Arctic’s snowy owl population. The Zoo’s initial task was to analyze blood samples from tagged birds, but in late March when an injured snowy owl was found in Maryland, the DNR asked the Zoo to administer its recovery. After a surgery to place pins in its broken wing, the owl is recovering and eating reliably. See her story in the video below or learn more about Project SNOWstorm.
